The Sounds of English
A Basic Course

as in <POOL> and as in <PULL> Listen

Listen and repeat:

-----------
fool ----------- full
pool ---------- pull
Luke --------- look
shoe --------- shook

Luke, you're too full of yourself!
Pull yourself together, Sue!
He took my new shoes.

Norwegian learners' problems:

These sounds are not quite like the Norwegian "u"-sounds, as in "ful" and "full". If you start out with a Norwegian long "u" and stop midway between that sound and a Norwegian "o"-sound, as in Tor, you will end up with an acceptable English sound.

Regional variant:

In many Scottish accents they do not make a distinction between long and short "u". Therefore, pool and pull sound the same.
