The Sounds of English
A Basic Course

as in <BUTTER> Listen

Listen The sound as such should not be too difficult to pronounce for most Norwegians. It is a "relaxed" sound, like the one we find at the end of verbs in many Norwegian dialects, for example in "hoppe" and "rope". In English it is always a light sound; it is never strongly stressed. The fact that it might be represented in spelling by any English letter used for vowels, together with the fact that we do not have the same type of rhythm in Norwegian and English, might make it difficult to recognize and use correctly. Underneath is a set of words that may easily be mispronounced by Norwegians. Take care to keep the -sounds light and very short. Sometimes they more or less disappear altogether, as you probably can hear in the examples below.
