The short half-open front vowel
(monophthong) is pronounced by the front of the tongue being raised towards
the hard palate and held in a position close to half open. The rims
of the tongue form a closure along the sides of the mouth, so the air
passes over the centre of the tongue. Lips are spread or neutral. The
sound is lax and short. It is generally somewhat more front than its
Norwegian counterpart, and must be clearly distinguished from the more
open . The illustration on the right shows the relative position
as compared to other front vowels.
