The short close to half-close back
vowel (monophthong) is pronounced by the back of the tongue being raised towards
the velum so as to form a relatively open passage. The lips are loosely
rounded to neutral. The sound is very different from the Norwegian short
/u/, which is front with strong lip rounding. Norwegians should pay
great attention to this difference. The illustration on the right shows
the relative tongue position of the sound as compared to other back
sounds.
