Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra & Bergen Art School

In this concert's mix of expressions, the main attraction is probably Gro Sandvik, solo flutist of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, together with 100 young flutists from Municipal Art Schools, performing John Corigliano's Pied Piper Fantasy, based on the German folk tale. Young dancers from Bergen Dance Centre will be acting rats, coreographed by Elisabeth Guino-o.

From American music the journey goes on to Argentina and Alberto Ginastera's colourful ballet suite "Estancia". Norway's contribution is the exotic Sami "joik", and music by Bergen's own Edvard Grieg, who is presented through his Peer Gynt Suite. "Anitra's Dance" and "The Hall of the Mountain King" will be accompanied by A-level dancers from Bergen Municipal Art School, all in Lorena Walker's choreography.

Edvard Grieg is an important part of the Bergen Philharmonic's 236-year history, having served as the Orchestra's Artistic Director in the 1880s. From 2003 American Andrew Litton will commence his position as Principal Conductor for the Bergen Philharmonic while continuing as Artistic Director for the Dallas
Symphony Orchestra.
